UPS Batteries: What They Are, What They Do, and How You Choose One

A UPS battery is an important commodity for your electrical or entertainment equipment. It is most widely used with computers. UPS stands for uninterruptible power supply; they help to protect your devices and electronics by acting as a battery. If you should have a power outage or power shortage, these valuable accessories are able to continue supplying the device with power. This can allow you to save your work on your computer, and then shut it down safely. These batteries can usually last for several hours, so you may even use them until the power is restored successfully.

These batteries are used between the electrical supply (usually a power outlet) and the electronic or device that you wish to protect. It keeps its charge when power is being supplied to it; and recharges as needed. When the power is lost, the UPS battery immediately kicks in and takes over, supplying power to the device it is connected to. Just as any other battery, their lifespan is limited. When the power source returns to supplying power for the battery, it then allows the electricity to flow naturally while also recharging itself for the next time that it is needed. It is a common misconception that these batteries are only used for computers; however, they can be used with a wide variety of devices. For example, if you are an avid gamer, you may consider using a UPS battery for your gaming console and television. Should you ever lose power, you will be able to continue gaming; or, save your progress and shut down your console properly.

Choosing the Proper Battery for Your Needs

These batteries are an absolute gift- and can save you many headaches, especially if you have an unreliable or overworked power supply in your area. You must choose a battery that is right for you, however. There are two main types of batteries, both with some differences you should take into consideration.

First, we have the vented UPS battery. This battery is a cheaper option, so it is a better choice for those on a budget. While it is still a good accessory to have, it is not as durable as our second option. It has a shorter lifespan, and can generally last for around five years.

The electrolytic battery is our next, and it is a better choice for those who want to get the most bang for their buck. It is a pricier option; but these batteries can last for up to twenty years! Even though you may be putting out more money for it, this battery is certainly worth it.

Your most important consideration when choosing a UPS battery is its voltage output. This should match to your devices. It should also have a power surge protector- power surges can fry your electronic devices. Depending on how much power you will be pulling off the battery, you should consider just how long the battery can last. Devices that are energy hungry will of course drain it much faster. Batteries that can supply more power for longer periods of time tend to cost much more- therefore, you should only use it for your most important devices.

This is very helpful. Actually I have a little issues with my UPS. It lasted for how many months only. I realized that when buying UPS battery do not just settle for any cheap brand. Invest in a high-quality UPS battery, even if it is a bit more expensive. A cheap but faulty unit will only damage your appliances and devices, costing you more money in the long run.
